Pat helped the latter win the NBA title as a player in 1972, and after that trained the team to tournaments in 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988. Pat afterwards won more NBA championships as a trainer and executive together with the Miami Heat.

Riley returned to the Lakers as an assistant trainer in 1980, directing the team to the NBA Finals as head coach in 1983, 1984 and 1986.

In 1990, amid rumors of player mistreatment and anger issues, Riley stepped down as coach of the Lakers. Regardless of this, Riley was named NBA Coach of the Year.

Following a short stint as an NBC commentator, Riley became head coach for the New York Knicks in 1991. He was named Trainer of the Year in 1993 and took the team to the NBA Finals in 1994.

In 1995, Riley resigned his place with all the Knicks and became head coach and president of the Miami Heat, where he was named Trainer of the Year again in 1997. After stepping down as trainer for quite some time to focus on his executive responsibilities, he returned to the sidelines and won his fifth tournament as a head coach in 2006.

Riley formally retired from training in 2008, however he was not finished making his mark as the Heat president. After Riley got superstar LeBron James to team with all star guard Dwyane Wade in 2010, Miami progressed to four back-to-back NBA finals, winning the title twice.
