Matthew Stephen Ward Biography:

Along with his touring, he also formed the Grammy Award-nominated She & Him with celebrity Zooey Deschanel, with the duet releasing four records by mid-2013. In his teens, he started playing his older brother’s guitar and taught himself the Beatles’ songbook. With influences that also contained country, gospel and jazz (with Louis Armstrong a leading inspiration), he played together with the Americana group Rodriguez for many years. The work was recorded in Portland, Oregon, where Ward set up store.

M. Ward’s style of music has been recognized by its analog sound, with the musician preferring to rely on classic designs of record as well as conventional tune thoughts from a folk and acoustic guitar palette. He’s also a self-avowed introvert who values linking with musicians over stardom.

Ward supplied music, including a tune with celebrity Zooey Deschanel, to the soundtrack of the 2008 movie The Go-Getter. He and Deschanel furthered their cooperation then, forming the duet She & Him. The duo released their debut record, Volume One, in 2008. Deschanel composed the majority of the melodies for the group and sang lead, that was also true for the act’s followup, Volume Two. The record also produced a Top 20 adult contemporary hit using its remake of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”

Along with his She & Him work and different touring obligations, Ward released a 2009 record together with the group Monsters of People, additionally featuring acclaimed musicians Jim James, Mike Mogis and Conor Oberst.
In the spring of 2012, Ward set forth his seventh studio album, A Wasteland Companion, that has been recorded in both America and United Kingdom and featured an variety of contributions from various instrumentalists.

“I believe the concept of having a company in dark times or dim areas is essential to keep going in whatever it’s that you do to get an income,” Ward said of his inspiration for the record’s name in a New York Times interview. “I make music for a living. And more frequently than not, old records keep me going, plus they keep me from becoming bored or tired of what I do to get a living.” In the spring of 2013, She & Him released their third record, Volume Three, with a U.S. summer tour to follow.
