She immigrated to the U.S. when she was 12 and finally wed, opening up a chain of eateries with husband Felice. Having co-founded the big site Eataly in 2010, Bastianich has additionally authored several publications, includingLidia’s Commonsense Italian Cooking.
Though Istria was at one stage considered part of Italy, the area came under Communist power by means of a Yugoslavian takeover. In 1956, Matticchio left her birthplace along with her family to settle in Trieste, living as refugees until they could immigrate to America. The two finally opened up the eatery Buonavia in Forest Hills, Queens. Another eatery, Villa Secondo, was established in 1972.
Ten years after, the upscale establishment Felidia was started in Manhattan’s East Side and became an important draw using its identifying, acclaimed take on Italian dishes. Lidia Bastianich started three more eateries in Nyc along with places in Kansas City and Pittsburgh. On the years she’s won multiple James Beard Foundation prizes, such as the 1999 Finest Chefs in America prize. Bastianich was afterwards selected to cook for Pope Benedict XVI in 2007.
