The son of an aircraft business executive, Nealon spent many of his early years in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He afterwards attended Sacred Heart University in nearby Fairfield, where he graduated with a diploma in advertising. As an alternative to pursue a corporate career, Nealon worked odd jobs while creating himself as a stand-up comedian.

In 1986, Nealon got the potential for a life: He joined the cast of Saturday Night Live as a supporting player, and became a full time cast member of the show the next season. He and Carvey created a comic pair of incredibly buff fitness specialists known as “Hans and Franz,” which proved to be a popular little with SNL fans. Nealon also played “Subliminal Man” and functioned as an anchorman for the “Weekend Update” faux news sketch for quite some time, following the departure of Dennis Miller.
