Constantly having a penchant for play, Lewis determined in the age of 7 that she wished to act. She got her first job in the age of 12, and three years afterwards filed for legal emancipation from her parents to sidestep child labor laws and publication more occupations.

She developed a significant drug problem that resulted in a stint in a Florida Church of Scientology detox facility when she was 26.

She afterwards said that working with Scorsese validated her performing instincts and procedure.
In 1992, Woody Allen hired Lewis for his movie Husbands and Wives. She went to play several high profile characters, including Johnny Depp’s love interest in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. She is well-known for her characters in 2003’s Old School as well as the 2009 Drew Barrymore movie Whip It.
