John Lee Hancock, Jr. Biography:

In 1897, he patented a mobile pencil sharpener called the “Love Sharpener.” Lee died in an automobile and train crash in North Carolina on December 26, 1931. Little is known concerning the life span of John Lee Love, the inventor of the mobile pencil sharpener. He applied to get a patent to get a mobile pencil sharpener in 1897. His application established that his creation was an “improved apparatus” that could double as a paperweight or decoration. The layout was straightforward, including a hand crank as well as a compartment to capture the pencil shavings. It had been known colloquially as the “Love Sharpener.” The sharpener continues to be in constant use as it was created.

While the pencil sharpener was Love’s most successful creation, it had not been his first. Love’s layout featured a detachable handle as well as a foldable aluminum plank, which makes it mobile and lightweight. Love hired attorneys from Nyc and Boston businesses to represent him while applying for both of his patents. Love expired on December 26, 1931, in a crash between an automobile and also a train in North Carolina.
