Jaycee Lee Dugard Biography:

Jaycee Dugard was kidnapped outside of her house in South Lake Tahoe, California, on June 10, 1991, at age 11. Renamed “Allissa,” Jaycee spent 18 years in captivity, residing in a backyard shack in the house of Garrido and his wife, Nancy Garrido. Jaycee escaped captivity in August 2009, when security officers from UC Berkeley ran a backround check on Phillip Garrido and found he had no records of kids.

Produced on May 3, 1980, Jaycee Lee Dugard grew up in the neighborhood of South Lake Tahoe, California. Jaycee’s stepfather, Carl Probyn, saw the abduction through his house’s garage window—he was the only witness of the offense.

Probyn promptly called local authorities, who have been assisted by the FBI in their hunt for Jaycee. The investigation contained dogs, aircraft and numerous law enforcement employees, but to no avail; Jaycee was not discovered. No one could envision the horror that was unfolding for Jaycee 170 miles away, in Antioch, California. Renamed “Allissa,” Jaycee shortly recognized the important reason for her abduction: She was raped repeatedly by Phillip Garrido, which resulted in two pregnancies.

Jaycee spent more than 18 years in captivity using the Garridos, who fed her innumerable lies and mostly forbad her contact with all the external world. Throughout that time, 11 years wrote in a journal often, documenting heavy depression, anxiety, loneliness and feelings of being “unloved.” 11 years always wondered about her family and whether they were hunting for her, but over time—and cut off from any relationships outside the Garrido house—the seriously miserable sufferer grew to cherish any human interaction, even that from her kidnappers.

In August 2009, Phillip Garrido started passing out fliers about his new church, God’s Want, on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley. Garrido was with Jaycee, as well as their two daughters, in the time. During his solicitation, campus security officers approached him and requested him to enroll his organization with campus offices. When he did, campus security found Garrido’s criminal past and determined to do an instant background check by phoning his parole agent.

The call proved to be enormous: Garrido’s representative was shocked when security officers mentioned his kids, as his records revealed he had no kids. Authorities were immediately called and shortly after, on August 26, 2009, Phillip and Nancy Garrido were arrested. More than 18 years after she was abducted, on August 26, 2009 a lovely, bright day in South Lake Tahoe, California Jaycee Dugard was reunited with her mom, Terry Probyn. Also, Phillip Garrido was named a strong defendant in a number of other California kidnapping cases.

In July 2011, Jaycee Dugard released a harrowing memoir, A Stolen Life, about her years spent against the Garridos. In March 2012, in a interview with Diane Sawyer, she spoke about her recent action, discussing her happiness to be back together with her family and her battle with “learning” how to be free. Throughout the interview, Diane remembered being too joyed after purchasing pizza within a recent excursion to New York City: “Simply walking down the road. With everybody. It had been the best minute,” she said.
