In June 1971, Levine made his debut in the Metropolitan Opera, where he ran a festival performance of Tosca. It was the start of a relationship that will span decades. Levine continued to work with all the Met until his official appointment to the job of principal conductor in 1973. He progressed to the function of music director in 1976.
