Kristal brought in millions from T shirt and products sales, although the club was shut in 2006 over back rent. He expired on August 28, 2007. Hillel Kristal was born on September 23, 1931, in Nyc, along with his family shortly moving to Hightstown, New Jersey, where he grew up. Kristal acquired a passion for music, studying the violin and going on to be a vocalist at Radio City Music Hall following a stint in the military, where he amused via radio.
Kristal went into behind the scenes musical work also, serving as supervisor of iconic jazz place the Village Vanguard by 1959 and after making college campus performances. From the mid-’60s, Kristal had found the cabaret nightclub and eatery Hilly’s in the West Village, home performers like Bette Midler during her early years on Broadway. By the end of the decade he started another nightclub, Hilly’s on the Bowery.
