He was raised in the universe of design, learning his trade in the hands of a mom who ran her very own dressmaking business. Versace went to benefit his mom after finishing high school. In 1972, Versace moved to Milan, where he started freelance design for Italian labels Genny, Callaghan and Complice. Versace started his own ready to wear range for women in 1978. The company was always a household event, along with his brother Santo and sister Donatella working for him.
Versace became known for his glamorous designs, creating an assortment of enchantress clothing that became his hallmark. He frequently used advanced fabrics including aluminum net or cutting edge techniques like “neo-couture” laser technology to fuse leather and rubber. The head of Medusa was also a recurring picture on a lot of his clothes items and accessories. He started his first couture collection in 1989 and added two clothes lines, Versus and Instante, to his company in the ’90s. Versace developed strong relationships using several stars and supermodels, including Elton John, Madonna and Naomi Campbell. As Anna Wintour told The New York Times, Versace “was the very first to realize the worth of celebrity in the leading row, as well as the worth of the supermodel, and set trend on a worldwide media stage.”
In 1987, Versace was given the Maschera D’Argento prize for his contributions to theatre. Along with clothes, the designer enlarged his brand into other ways. He started his classic Touch perfume line in 1991 and his line of furniture as well as house goods in 1993. Versace also published numerous novels, including Rock and Royalty, The Art of Being You and Guys Without Ties.
Versace was just 50 years old when he was gunned down outside his South Beach house in Miami, Florida, on July 15, 1997. The precious fashion designer was killed by 27-year old spree killer Andrew Cunanan, who had been discovered dead in a Miami Beach boathouse eight days after. Versace was survived by his longtime associate Antonio D’Amico. The couple even worked collectively, with D’Amico designing for the Versace Sport line.
A who is who of the style world—from Anna Wintour to Ralph Lauren to Calvin Klein to Marc Jacobs—turned out to wish good-bye to Versace. Whitney Houston, Jon Bon Jovi and Elton John were among the performers in the memorial. A designer to stars and royals including Princess Diana, Versace is recalled for bringing energy and artwork to an business considered out of touch with all the road. In under ten years, he assembled an empire worth $807 million. His sister took over the creative reins of the firm after his departure.
