Fayard Antonio Nicholas Biography:

Produced in Alabama in 1914, Fayard Nicholas was a popular African American tap dancer through the Harlem Renaissance. Alongside brother Harold, Fayard started performing complex, high flying song and dance routines in the early 1930s, in Nyc. Breaking through the colour barrier, the pair went to become among the most famous show business actions of the 1930s and ’40s.

Fayard Antonio Nicholas was born to school-educated, musician parents, on October 20, 1914, in Mobile, Alabama. In addition to his brother, Harold, Fayard started performing in his youth, perfecting his pat and “flash dancing” abilities. The Nicholas Brothers first appeared at Nyc ‘s famed Cotton Club in the early 1930s, bringing notice for his or her complex, high flying song and dance routine, and went to become stars of the jazz arena through the Harlem Renaissance. The couple also popularized tap dancing which derived from Irish jigs and earlier types of West African dance around the world.

From the beginning of the 1940s, the Nicholas Brothers were international stars. Both guys starred in several hit movies, including Stormy Weather (1943) with Cab Calloway and Lena Horne, and got a reputation as the best dancing team in The United States.

The brothers continued to perform together for five more decades. The performance came to a conclusion in 2000, when Harold died of heart failure. Fayard Nicholas died on January 24, 2006, in Toluca Lake, California. Now, the Nicholas Brothers continue to inspire tap dancers all over the world. Several well-known performers, including Savion Glover and Gregory Hines, have credited the couple by using their success.
