His parents ran an acting and writing school from their house, which affected Roberts and his sisters Lisa and Julia Roberts to all become celebrities. Roberts’ first big break arrived in 1976, when he was cast as Ted Bancroft to the soap opera Another World.
He grew up immersed in the theatre scene and was encircled by celebrities. His mother and dad ran a successful playing and writing school from their house.
Roberts developed a stutter as a kid and discovered the only real time he could talk fully fluidly was when he memorized addresses and afterwards presented them. Because of this, Roberts started participating in his parents’ courses from a young age as a kind of speech therapy.
Roberts’ first acting role came when he was a kid. He was cast in a locally produced Sunday morning television show entitled The Small Leaders. While Roberts was really close together with his dad, his parents divorced when he was a little boy and he later became estranged from his mom because he disliked her new husband. His hard childhood led him into substance abuse in a young age.
Despite his tough upbringing, Roberts continued to pursue playing. As a teen he studied in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and afterwards at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Nyc.
He failed to take pleasure in the work and turned to the stage instead, working off Broadway. Shortly after, Roberts was found by representative Bill Treusch, who helped the struggling performer get his first movie part. Roberts appeared in the cult favourite King of the Gypsies, that he earned a Golden Globe nomination, and then opposite Sissy Spacek in the 1981 movie Raggedy Man.
In June 1981 Roberts was involved with a serious car crash, which left him comatose for three days using a bruised brain, broken bones and much facial injury.
As an outcome of his facial injury there was a change in both Roberts’ appearances and later the parts he was offered.
But, by the late 1980s Roberts’ career started to consist of B movies and direct-to-video releases. Roberts made a comeback in 1996, across when he gave up drugs, using the movie It Is My Party. The versatile performer has appeared in numerous movies and television series. He’s also earned little supporting parts in big hits like The Dark Knight and The Expendables.
In 1987 Roberts was arrested for harassing a girl and hitting a police officer, both while under the influence of drugs. He pleaded guilty to harassment, as well as the other charges were later dropped.
Roberts participated in a public relationship, break up and custody battle with girlfriend Kelly Cunningham in the early 1990s. The performer lost custody of the daughter, Emma.
Roberts’ sister and fellow performer, Julia Roberts, sided with Cunningham through the custody battle, tearing apart her relationship with Eric. The once close sibs became estranged from each other. It wasn’t until 2004, together with the arrival of Julia’s twins, the sibs reconciled their differences and started mending their relationship.
