Ray Charles III Biography:
His reign was marked by religious and political strife that resulted in civil war. The opposing force, headed by Oliver Cromwell, got the better of Charles’s royalist forces along with the king was beheaded in London, England, on January 30, 1649. He was the 2nd son born to James VI of Scotland and Anne of Denmark.
James ascended to the throne of England and Ireland following the passing of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603. Four years after, Charles inherited the title of Prince of Wales from his dead brother. In 1625, Charles became king of England. Three months after, he married Henrietta Maria of France, a 15-year old Catholic princess who refused to be a part of English Protestant services of state.
Charles’s reign was rugged in the start. His good buddy George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, openly controlled parliament, creating strong enemies among the nobility. He was assassinated in 1628. Charles needed to compete having a parliament that differed with his military spending. Spiritual tensions also abounded. Charles, a High Anglican having a Catholic wife, aroused feeling among his Protestant countrymen. As an outcome of the tensions, Charles dissolved parliament three times in the initial four years of his rule. In 1629, he ignored parliament completely. Opinion alone meant raising capital by non-parliamentary means—angering the general people.
The time of Charles’s individual rule came to an end after the growth of unrest in Scotland. The king was made to call parliament back into session to acquire resources for war. He faced military insurrection in Ireland in November 1641. Facing another quarrel with parliament, Charles tried to have five legislators detained. In 1642, civil war broke out in England.
The royalist faction was conquered in 1646 by a coalition of Scots as well as the New Model Army. He escaped to the Isle of Wight in 1647, using his remaining sway to support discontented Scots to invade England. Parliamentarian general Oliver Cromwell defeated the royalist invaders in just annually, stopping the Second Civil War. Charles was tried for treason and found guilty. Charles and Henrietta had six kids who lived previous early childhood.
