Ben Okri Biography

Produced March 15, 1959, Ben Okri was taught both in his native Nigeria as well as in England. His first novels, Flowers and Shadows (1980) and The Landscapes Within (1981) use surrealism to reveal the dysfunction of a politically scarred nation. This theme persists in Okri’s work, which likewise contains the Booker Prize–winning novel The Famished Road (1991) and essay collection A Way of Being Free (1997).In April 2014, Okri was conferred an honorary doctorate by the University of Pretoria for his contributions to literature.
