Explorer lvar Nez Cabeza de Vaca was born 1490, in Extremadura, Castile, Spain. By September all but his party of 60 had perished; it reached the coast near present day Galveston, Texas. The survivors lived on the list of natives of the area for four years, and Cabeza de Vaca carved out functions as a dealer as well as a healer locally. In 1532 he and another three remaining members of his first party set out for Mexico, where they expected to connect with other representatives of the Spanish empire. They traveled through Texas, and perhaps what are now New Mexico and Arizona, before arriving in northern Mexico in 1536, where they met up with fellow Spaniards, who were in the area to get slaves. Following a short period as governor of a state in Mexico, he became a judge in Seville, Spain, a place he occupied for the rest of his life.
