Following his marriage to Emily Ruth Black, which finished in 1994, Kennedy wed Mary Richardson, who had been discovered dead in her house on May 16, 2012, almost two years after she and Robert divorced. It was later discovered that Mary had died of asphyxiation due to hanging. In a young age, he was instructed to value a solid education and political activism.

He went to get doctorate and master’s degrees in law in the University of Virgina and Pace University, respectively, and started working for Riverkeeper, a nonprofit organization focused on maintaining the Hudson River, shortly after. In 1998, Kennedy co-founded a bottled water firm, Tear of the Clouds LLC, with Chris Bartle and John Hoving.

In the mid-2000s, Kennedy’s work centered on recommending for sustainable energy development and supporting citizens to shield their local waterways. In May of 2010, he was named a “Hero for the Planet” by Time.com because of his work with Riverkeeper, helping restore the Hudson River.
