Maziar Bahari Biography:
Eleanor “Nell” Gwyn (created February 2, 1650) was selling oranges in the Drury Lane Theater in London when she became the mistress of celebrity Charles Hart, who trained her for the stage. Shortly, “pretty, witty Nell” was the leading comedienne of the King’s Company as well as the mistress of Charles II.
With Puritanism a recently available thing of days gone by, Gwyn was among the primary performers ever permitted to perform on the English stage. The people found her high spirits and wit refreshing, and she became a sign of the Reformation humor, or comedy of manners.
