Miguel José Ferrer Biography:

Miguel started composing songs as a teen and signed his first recording contract in 2004. He got attention for his 2010 launch All I Want Is You. His dad is Mexican American and his mother is African American. Miguel’s parents divorced when he was 8 years old, after which he along with his brother resided chiefly with their mom. Miguel listened to R&B, funk, hiphop, rock and jazz as a kid, mainly due to the varied musical tastes of his parents. From the age of 14, his preference was evolving alone, and he was composing and recording his own tunes.

He finished his first studio album, Young & Free, in 2006. Black Ice shelved the record, releasing just the single “Getcha Hands Up.” Disappointed using the single, its video and his treatment complete, Miguel parted ways with all the label. He’s since said this experience taught him to manage the manner where he was promoted, as an alternative to relying on the label to distinguish him from the group of male R&B vocalists.

In 2007, Miguel signed a fresh recording contract with Jive Records. His next album, All I Want Is You, had not been released for a number of years pending a suit brought by Black Ice for breach of contract. The record was launched in November 2010. Sales were slow in the beginning but grew steadily over time, mainly as a result of radio popularity of the tracks “Sure Thing” and “Quickie.”

RCA consumed Jive Records and a number of its own musicians, including Miguel, in 2011. The record was an immediate success. Debuting at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, the record given critical acclaim as well as powerful sales. The runaway hit track, “Adorn,” received routine radio and video play. The tune was compared to Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” because of its sultry tone and easy rate. In 2013, Miguel’s “Adorn” won the Grammy Award for best R&B tune. He also won the Soul Train Music Award for best R&B/soul male musician, and received a number of added nominations throughout the season.
