Produced in Czechoslovakia in 1956, Martina Navratilova started playing tennis at a youthful age, and was among the best female tennis players on the planet in the late 1970s and early ’80s. After in life, she authored a collection of fiction novels and was active in the gay rights movement.

Because of this, Navratilova never developed close to her dad, Miroslav Subert, a complex man who suffered from melancholy and afterwards killed himself after the death of his second union.

In 1962, Navratilova’s mom remarried, to a guy named Mirek Navrtil. Navratilova eventually took her mother’s stepfather’s last name, tweaking it somewhat with the addition of a female “ova” in the finish. Navratilova and her mother’s new dad developed close, with Mirek becoming her first tennis coach.

The game was definitely in Navratilova’s blood. Her mother’s grandma had been an overseas player who’d upset the mom of Vera Sukova, a 1962 Wimbledon finalist, in a national tournament. Navratilova’s own tennis instincts were coupled using a fire for development. In age 4, her grandmother was hitting tennis balls off of a cement wall. By age 7, her grandmother was playing consistently, working with Mirek and spending hours on the court daily, working on her strokes and footwork.

At age 9, Navratilova started taking lessons from Czech champ George Parma, who further refined the young player’s match. At age 15, she won the Czech national tournament. In 1973, at 16, she turned professional and started competing in America.

Navratilova understood that remaining in her home country might restrict her opportunities on the professional circuit. With Czechoslovakia directly under Soviet control, 18-year old Navratilova defected to America in the 1975 U.S. Open. The choice meant she had be cut off from her family for a long time, but nonetheless, in addition it set her profession up for an unprecedented amount of succeeding.

Navratilova defended her Wimbledon title the next year, once again defeating Evert in the finals, and then won a third Grand Slam triumph in the 1981 Australian Open.

In 1982, Navratilova got both the Wimbledon and the French Open crowns, and also would continue to lose just six matches from 1982 to 1984.
