Donovan and his sibs, twin sister Tristan and older brother Josh, were raised mostly by their mom, Donna. Their dad, Tim, played semipro ice hockey.

Donovan was a natural sportsman. In the age of 5, he started playing football competitively. From the time he entered Redlands East Valley High School he was likewise an accomplished gymnast, but football was where he really shone. As a sophomore he rolled up 17 goals, paving the way for league MVP honours. The following year, he scored 16 times. His scoring art captured the eye of a bigger crowd and, in his senior year of high school, Donovan joined the U.S. national football system.

Finally, Donovan made your choice to cross the Atlantic, signing a deal with all the German team, Bayer Leverkusen. But his encounter in a fresh state, in another culture he understood so little about, caused adversity for the very first time in his young career.

In 2000, Donovan came up huge on the international stage when he helped lead the Americans from the initial round in the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

He guided San Jose to another title in 2003, and clocked in an MVP-caliber season.

Still contractually obligated to Bayer, his old German club, Donovan returned briefly to Europe in 2005 before pulling off a deal to pull himself in the team. His MLS recovery, however, arrived with the L.A. Galaxy, which had traded for his rights after Donovan had restarted playing in Germany.

Just as he’d done with all the Quakes, Donovan led the Galaxy on a title run in 2005. Along the way, Donovan popped in 12 goals and notched 10 assists, in addition to tallying another four post-season scores.

In all, Donovan’s MLS success is almost unmatched. Along with the three titles, Donovan is one of just a few of players with 60 goals and 60 assists.
