Josiah Henson Biography

Josiah Henson was born into captivity June 15, 1789, in Port Tobacco, Maryland. In 1828, Henson became a preacher for the Methodist Episcopal Church and could make money to purchase his liberty. His master took the cash, but then increased the cost to $1,000. In 1830 Henson fled to Canada along with his family where he became involved in the Underground Railroad, leading over 200 slaves to liberty.
