Produced on February 4, 1882, in Western Bay, Newfoundland (which would later become part of Canada), poet E.J. Pratt trained for the ministry and later taught for many years at the University of Toronto. His early group, The Titans (1926), includes the widely read “The Cachalot,” an account of a whale hunt. Brbeuf and His Brethren (1940) is regarded as his finest work by some. Later groups comprise Dunkirk (1941) and Towards the Last Spike (1952).
