Dominique Helena Moceanu Biography:

Produced on September 30, 1981, in Hollywood, California, to Romanian immigrants, Dominique Moceanu started training with renowned gymnastics trainer Bla Krolyi at age 10. Dominique Helena Moceanu was born on September 30, 1981, in Hollywood, California. The oldest kid of Dumitru and Camelia, Romanian immigrants with qualifications in gymnastics, Dominique Moceanu took her first courses in the sport at age 3. Krolyi taken Moceanu into his plan, and she became the youngest person in the U.S. junior national team.

Dominique Moceanu went to become one of Krolyi’s most promising pupils. Despite being the youngest person in the squad, that has been nicknamed “The Magnificent Seven,” Moceanu drew comparisons to Comaneci and, as such, shouldered significant anticipations. She performed well in her first three routines uneven bars, balance beam and a floor exercise but astonishingly fell twice while trying to stick her vault landings.

Moceanu provided a more powerful operation two years after at the Goodwill Games in Nyc, becoming the primary non-Russian girl to win an all around gold medal in gymnastics. She suffered a knee injury throughout the 2000 Olympic trials, preventing her from participating at that year’s Summer Games, subsequently elected to forego further international contest. Moceanu tried a return to the sport several years after, but suffered more injuries in 2005 and did not qualify for the 2006 U.S. National Championships.

In October 1998, the 17-year old Moceanu filed suit against her parents for the right to be classified an adult and recover about $1 million in lost earnings. A monetary settlement was achieved, and Moceanu afterwards made up with her parents, before Dumitru died of cancer. In 2007, Moceanu found she had a younger sister, Jen Bricker, who was given up for adoption by their parents. Despite being born with no legs, Bricker was also a talented sportsman who performed as professional acrobat and aerialist.

Moceanu is married to Mike Canales, a fellow former gymnast who became a surgeon, and has two kids, Vincent Michael and Carmen Noel. In the year 2012, she released an autobiography, Off Balance: A Memoir. The novel attracted focus for her descriptions of the verbal and mental abuse she endured while training under Krolyi, and Moceanu continues to campaign for reform inside the sport to shield young gymnasts.
