Benjamin Chase Harper Biography:

He’s released records understood for his or her social consciousness and music genre fusions, including his introduction Welcome to the Cruel World and Diamonds on the Inside, and has won Grammys for his work together with the Blind Boys of Alabama. He was married to actress Laura Dern.

He was brought up in a household of musicians, with his grandparents creating the Folk Music Center and his mom and dad trained as a vocalist-guitarist and percussionist, respectively.

Harper took to the guitar along with a kid, teaching himself to play, and also would eventually grow to adore playing his hallmark Weissenborn lap guitars. He was requested to really go on tour by iconic bluesman Taj Mahal, with whom he performed on television at the same time.

J.P. Plunier finally became Harper’s supervisor and helped invent a deal in which the youthful musician signed with Virgin Records.

Musical signs of Harper’s sociopolitical consciousness continued with 1995’s Fight For Your Own Mind, that has been certified gold. Harper’s lyrical subjects were fueled by his experiences growing up having a mixed-ethnic tradition and experiencing racial bias. He also has a varied musical palette that fuses normally disparate groupings like folk, soul, classic rock and alt-pop.

Harper’s encouraging group was billed as the Innocent Criminals, and his third record, The Will to Live, came forth in 1997, with Burn to Shine dropping two years after.

Harper turned to gospel with his next record, There Is a Light, which he recorded together with the Blind Boys of Alabama.

His next two records, the two-cd Either Side of the Gun (2006) and Lifelines (2007), reached the top of Billboard’s major records graph. Harper subsequently teamed together with the group Relentless7 to release 2009’s White Lies for Dark Times.

In 2011, Harper continued his steady outcome with all the rock- and funk-oriented full length attempt Give Till It’s Gone, fronted by the rousing single “Rock n’ Roll Is Free.” The retrospective group By My Side premiered in the autumn of 2012. Harper subsequently teamed up with legendary blues harmonica player and guitarist Charlie Musselwhite for the 2013 record Get Up! Harper also signed a co-publishing deal with BMG Chrysalis U.S. the same year.

Following an earlier union, Harper wed actress Laura Dern in 2005, as well as the couple had two kids. (Harper has two additional kids from an earlier union.)
