Andre Benjamin Biography:
Produced in 1975 in Atlanta, Georgia, Andr 3000 started performing in his teens having a friend as 2 Protections Deep. The pair got a record deal and switched their name to OutKast. Their first single, 1993’s “Players’ Ball,” was a Christmas song, plus it remained at No. 1 on the rap charts for six weeks. From the end of the decade, OutKast was a known amount, as well as their single “Hey Ya!” cemented the group’s name. The tune went on to be named one of Rolling Stone’s top 500 songs ever, and OutKast accumulated six Grammy Awards on the way. Shortly after, Andre 3000 started acting, appearing in several films as well as on television, while also composing music for both. His latest attempt is impersonating Jimi Hendrix in the 2013 biopic All Is by My Side. While at Tri Cities, he met Antwan Patton, as well as the two immediately became competitors on the institution ‘s rap arena. Just as fast, however, the two recognized that their common love of music would bring them together, and they became lifelong friends.
When Andr started to rebel as a teenager, his mom sent him to reside together with his dad, Lawrence Walker, but Walker could not, or did not need to, curtail Andr’s rebellious streak, and Andr dropped out of high school during his junior year (he’d later earn his GED). Like the majority of teens, Andr spent lots of his time hanging around malls, however he and Patton used these locales as performance spaces, forming a musical duo called 2 Protections Deep, and rapping for throngs at shopping centers as well as in parking lots.
They soon were able to get presented to Organized Noize, an Atlanta production trio, and Andr and Patton started hanging out in the trio’s studio with other Atlanta artists. Before long, their organization with Organized Noize led to an audition with L.A. Reid, the cofounder of LaFace, an imprint of Arista Records. Reid was underwhelmed, therefore the duo went back to the studio and refined their sound, showing up on Reid’s doorstep yet again when they were prepared. Now, Reid offered them a contract, but both young men were still minors, as well as their parents would not allow them sign a contract, so they’d have to wait a year to make it official.
The duet switched its name to OutKast and cut its first single, “Players’ Ball,” in 1993 to get a compilation Christmas record. The tune went gold and kept the No. 1 position on the rap charts for six weeks. The duo’s sound was labeled by some as being part of the new “Dirty South” hip hop, but skimming through any one of the records shows tunes which are not readily categorized. Around now, Andr made some changes to his lifestyle that will help redefine him as an individual and as an amusement figure: He gave up smoking and drinking and became a vegan, and he also started to dress in a outlandish manner, which helped him develop new interest in the media as well as the general public.
In 1998, OutKast’s success came back to bite them, as their song “Rosa Parks,” ignited a suit by Rosa Parks herself. (The suit was dismissed but Parks appealed in 2003.) Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (2003) was the next record to appear, also it had been exceptional in several ways. First, each member of OutKast promised one half of the record The Love Below was Andr’s and Speakerboxxx was Big Boi’s (Patton’s acquired stage name). The infectiously popular tune “Hey Ya!” was afterwards named on Rolling Stone magazine’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list.
Andr next took on Hollywood, getting from behind the mic as well as facing the camera in the 2003 movie Hollywood Homicide, starring Harrison Ford. A couple of years after he was back on the silver screen with four more movies, including Be Cool and Four Brothers. While he’s appeared in a number of movies and TV shows within the span of his career, his character as Jimi Hendrix inOscar-victor John Ridley’sAll Is by My Side(2014) marks his largest on screen performance to date. If Andr has shown anything in his varied career, it is that he is always up for something new.
